Po and the Furious Five from a scene in Dreamworks Animation Studio's Kung Fu Panda. This was painted from an existing production still, just like my previous post. I wanted to broaden my layout and painting skills so that some day I would be able to better design effective compositions of my own. I guess part of my process of learning could entail making studies from existing work and hopefully that'll allow me to incorporate these principles into my own work in the future. It was a fun exercise and I enjoyed it. The painting was started by a quick line sketch directly in PS3. Then it was followed by a basic color block-in and finally topped off with further brush work. While coloring, it was quite tempting to just use the color picker to select the colors off of the reference image, but resisting that urge was rewarding and it forced me to pay more attention to what colors were being laid down. Most of the details were spent on Po and the rest were kept looser...it's hard to resist from overworking a painting! I struggled with it at school and I still have issues with it!
